Age of Consent 13
jamie | November 26, 2006I thought this was a joke. I had heard rumors before, but I guess this confirms it. In a recent Mainichi Shinbun WaiWai article:
“In over 80 countries around the world, the age of consent is 16, but in Japan sex is only banned among those under 13. If 13-year-olds aren’t capable of judging whether it’s right or wrong to have sex, there’s not much to say that kids who are 14 or 15 will be able to decide any better. Japan must raise the age to consent to 16,” Akaeda tells Shukan Asahi. “Also, we need to have sex education in all junior high schools. When you drive a car, you need a license, right? Why should sex be any different? If kids don’t get good grades in sex education, they should be given remedial education until they thoroughly understand what’s going on.” (By Masuo Kamiyama)
A little further investigation reveals that although the national age of consent is in fact 13, most prefectures (governing districts) do in fact override it to 16. So what does this tell us? That the emperor, or the government, are perverts; but that local councils are not? Mayhaps…

with that theory … we could never do anything, for it is always within a year of a year. Not that I think 10 year olds need to do the nasty, but, if drinking age is 21, but 20 year olds aren’t responsible enough, what makes a 21 year old? And if 21 isn’t good enough, then 22 wouldn’t be either.
Guess we should never have sex, ever … it would sure cure the over-population problem! To me, most of it is b.s. lame excuses instead of intellectually debating the real issues and reasons. 14 is too young for sex, but 14 year olds have been sentenced to life in prison for murder. Sounds like they are confused on what rules go across the board. Sex is taboo for this generation, since the last generation was sex-crazy … a bit hypocritical, eh?
Still need to make it clear, I don’t condone premature sex, just pointing out inconsistency and weak arguments with public opinions over time and issues, especially when it comes to age.
Oh, and what is with someone able to go to war at 18, but cannot have a drink … old enough to risk death, but not have a margarita at Epcot.
Thank you for your comments, anon. I agree that American
Jamie | January 5, 2008Thank you for your comments, anon. I agree that American laws concerning what you can and cant do at what ages are ridiculous - though not sure I’d want 16 year old drunk drivers with guns. Perhaps it would be better if they could drink at 16, but not drive until 21 and not own a gun until… never! But the fact remains that an age must be set (by current thinking) and hence a boundary will be drawn somewhere. Regardless of how silly it is than one day you cant have sex, the next you can, the laws make the process of prosecution all the more defined. Imagine how long prosecution would take if the law said the age of consent was somewhere between 14 and 21, depending on the individuals involved~ that would be even more stupid!
I think whats more interesting that whilst the age of puberty is the lowest it has ever been, the age of consent is at the highest! Go figure~ Back as recent as the Victorian era, girls would be married at 14, when they hadn’t yet physically matured.
I think ultimately it is an issue of mental maturity more than physical. Todays young-uns cant be trusted with a plastic spork, let alone a loaded gun or a penis.
